The lake was created after the sand extraction for the construction of the Grebbe Line and the A12 motorway. Originally, the area was a large sand drift and that came in handy when this lake was further deepened in 1972 and turned into a beautiful beach with swimming water. The area is visited by more than 600,000 people a year. It is not only in demand on hot summer days, but also in winter when the lake is frozen.
The recreation area is 60 hectares in size.
