Paesens, founded in the 11th century, grew into a fishing village. From the 16th century onwards, the village became increasingly distant from the sea due to siltation and in the 18th century the twin village of Moddergat arose west of Paesens. This made it easier for the fishing boats to anchor in the roadstead. The inhabitants of both villages formed one fishing fleet.
Paesens and Moddergat are known for their fishing past, especially because of the fishing disaster in 1883. During a severe spring storm, 17 ships were wrecked and 83 villagers were killed.
