The beautiful estate in the middle of Aalbeek has a tumultuous history. Of the original buildings, only the neoclassical, renovated coach house Villa Aalbeek remains. A few rare trees still stand on the former estate, including an enormous giant sequoia with a circumference of nearly five meters! Near Villa Aalbeek stands a column with the Latin inscription 'Aalbeek centrum orbis': Aalbeek as the center of the world, due to its central location in South Limburg and Western Europe, 'the old world'.
