The Wadden Sea is one of the last major wadden and tidal areas in the world. The area stretches from Den Helder to the Danish Esbjerg, over three countries. The Wadden Sea is unique in its kind. The world changes no less than twice a day. One moment you will find miles of vast mudflats, the next moment everything is under water. The Wadden Sea owes its name to the fact that you can walk or wade through it once in a while. Hence the Dutch name 'Wadden Sea', in Frisian the 'Waadsee', the ford.
The weather is often boisterous and difficult to predict. If you want to survive there, you have to be able to adapt. No wonder that special plants and animals can be found in and around the Wadden Sea. The mudflats appear bare, but appearances can be deceiving. It is teeming with life. On the mudflats there are many worms, shrimps and crabs. That's what the birds that use the Wadden Sea area to forage must have.
The Wadden Sea has the status of UNESCO World Heritage. This underlines that the area has such great natural value for the world that it deserves special protection.
