Oud-Geleen is a historic part of the district of Geleen. As early as around 5,000 B.C. People lived in (Old) Geleen. This makes it one of the oldest inhabited areas in the Netherlands. The centre of Oud-Geleen is the church, which was founded in Carolingian times (800-850). The current church tower is the oldest monument in Geleen and was built in 1504.
The arrival of the Maurits state mine and its official commissioning in 1925 also meant a major revolution for Oud-Geleen. For the first time, many strangers came to live in the area and they were not used to that. Oud-Geleen is and remains a district with an appearance that is unique in many ways.
