In the archives the name 'Eyckholt' is mentioned for the first time in around 1385. The castle was then owned by the Van der Lynden van den Eyckholt family. Holt is another word for forest. The castle must have stood near a forest in the past. In the 18th century, the castle slowly fell into ruins. Today, only the remains of a round wall and the corner of a tower can be seen. The very thick walls betray its medieval origins. The location is now owned by Natuurmonumenten. The ruin has been restored with restraint, in connection with the fact that Natuurmonumenten would like to preserve its romantic appearance.
