The head-neck-body farm originated from the longhouse farm, a farm where the living and business areas are under a continuous roof. Due to better agricultural methods in the 16th century, there was a need for more storage space for the harvest. This was satisfied by adding a section behind the living area on the side of the barn. This resulted in the head-neck-body farm, where the living area does not face directly towards the barn. In later, completely newly built farms, this layout was maintained.
The components of the head-neck-body farm are functional: living in the front house (head), working in the neck, and storage for the harvest and livestock in the barn (body).
