The cafes and many small restaurants in the streets around Gerard Douplein are busy. The Pilsvogel on the corner of the square is mentioned in the famous book 'A Woman Comes to the Doctor' by Kluun. The main character enjoys going there and refers to it as "a flirt place disguised as a brown café where the girls from De Pijp come." The artwork in the square was designed by Henk Duijn.
He wanted to create a jewel in which the different cultures in the neighborhood could recognize themselves. The inlaid rosettes made of brass and glass reflect in the sun during the day. In the evening, a drawing of light emerges from the light sources embedded in the openworked bronze crowns. Together with the artwork at Van der Helstplein and the light ornament on the roof of the Okura hotel, this forms the beginning of a light route through De Pijp.
