Around 1510, there must have been a permanent wooden bridge over the Rhine halfway between Bodegraven and Woerden. It is likely that the hamlet of Nieuwerbrug formed around that bridge. In the middle of the 16th century, this bridge was replaced by a stone version, funded by the joint residents of the hamlet. The maintenance of this bridge left much to be desired; the Groot-Waterschap of Woerden insisted on improvements several times around 1640.
To cover the costs of all this, permission was granted in 1788 by the States of Holland to place a toll gate, where people from outside Nieuwerbrug had to pay to use the bridge. The residents of Nieuwerbrug themselves and a few others were exempt from the toll. The toll was leased by the Bridge Masters to the highest bidder. Toll is still collected in Nieuwerbrug for the use of the bridge, making it the oldest private toll bridge in the Netherlands.
The bridge has been replaced several times over the centuries. Since 1910, the bridge has no longer been made of wood but of metal. The current bridge dates from 1990.
