Since the 14th century, Goedereede has literally been a good roadstead (anchorage) for seagoing vessels. Goedereede was granted city rights as early as 1312 and is still the only town on Goeree-Overflakkee. Later, the harbour began to silt up and in the 18th century the harbour mouth was completely outside the town. This meant the end of Goedereede as a lively and prosperous trading city. However, with its narrow streets, beautiful old houses and intimate harbor, Goedereede has lost none of its charm.
The only Dutch pope - Adriaan Boelens (2 March 1459 – 14 September 1523), Adrian VI - lived in Goedereede for some time. His home is now the hotel/restaurant De Gouden Leeuw.
