ROBBENOORDBOS

Description

Not all parts of the new Wieringermeer polder turned out to be suitable for agriculture. In the northeast of the polder, the groundwater level remained too high. Here, the soil of the former Zuiderzee consisted of both clay and sandy soil. Due to the water pressure from the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer, there was an upward flow of water. The groundwater is pushed up by a layer containing iron and salt. Because these areas are not suitable for agriculture, trees were planted.
This led to the creation of a young forest, the Robbenoord Forest. Unfortunately, however, almost no trees remained standing after the IJsselmeer dike was blown up by the occupying forces (April 17, 1945), and the Wieringermeer polder filled up again in 2 days. After the dike was closed (August 5, 1945) and the polder was drained (December 11, 1945), everything was replanted.
