On the edge of De Biesbosch lies the picturesque village of Drimmelen. The current village of Drimmelen commemorated its 350th anniversary in 1995 and is thus still a relatively young village. There is also an Old-Drimmelen, which was referred to as New-Drimmelen before 1645. Therefore, there must have been an even older village of Drimmelen, which was struck by the St. Elisabeth flood in 1421.
The very first Drimmelen must be sought in the current Biesbosch on the bank of the medieval Maas. Because of its high location on a riverbank, the name Drummelen originated, derived from 'drumlin', an Irish-Celtic word for an elongated hill. Irish monks brought Christianity to Geertruidenberg and the surrounding area, and they are presumably responsible for the name Drummelen. Quite soon, as a result of sound change, Drimmelen emerged.
