The head-neck-hull farm originated from the longhouse farm, a farm where residential and commercial areas are under a continuous roof. Due to the better farming methods in the 16th century, there was a need for more storage space for the harvest. This was met by adding a piece behind the living area on the side of the barn. This created the head-neck-hull farmhouse, where the living area is not directly in front of the barn. In the case of later, completely newly built, farms, this design is maintained.
The components of a head-neck-hull farm are functional: living in the head (front house), working in the neck and harvest storage and cattle sheds in the hull (barn). A head-neck-hull farm was suitable for both cattle breeding and arable farming. There is a difference in the shape of the farm.
A cattle farm can be recognized by the higher front house with the milk cellar underneath and the stable windows in the barn.
An arable farm has an extended front house with extra storage space for grain above the living quarters and larger windows at the back of the barn, which was used as a threshing room.
The Heemstra State is a head-neck-trunk farmhouse built in 1823 with an upstairs room. The upstairs room above the large milk cellar in the front house of the farm was usually furnished as a neat room. The room was only used during special events, such as a wedding. In the event of a death, the deceased was laid out there and carried out from there through the front door.
