The bombing of Middelburg took place during the May Days of 1940, on May 17, 1940, during the fighting in Zeeland. A large part of the historical city center of Middelburg was destroyed by the resulting fire. Although it is referred to as a bombing, it mainly concerns an artillery shelling. Which of the warring parties was responsible for this has never been fully clarified.
