Montfoort Castle in Montfoort in Utrecht was built in 1163 by bishop Godefried van Rhenen to defend the Sticht against the county of Holland. Only part of the outer bailey is still there. The castle was blown up in the disaster year of 1672 by invading French troops of Louis XIV and was never rebuilt. What remains is the beautiful entrance gate with two heavy round towers. This gives access to the courtyard of the walled outer bailey. The actual castle grounds are located under the provincial road.
