On top of the Heunsberg in Valkenburg is the Wilhelmina tower, a watchtower from 1906. The thirty-metre-high national monument is built of marl in neo-Gothic style with pointed arch-shaped windows and gargoyles.
The construction of this tower was a response to a
wooden watchtower on the Cauberg (which no longer exists). At the time, there were two rival associations in Valkenburg to promote tourism.
This tower fits exactly in the time frame of Valkenburg as an emerging tourist destination.
