In 1693, the shipyard 'De Hoop' was built next to the lock in Workum. In the 18th century, sailing ships for inland and coastal shipping were built in the carpenter's shed. In the 19th century, many wooden fishing boats slid down the slipway here.
The yard was renovated in 1976 and 1977. Nowadays, mainly historic ships are restored and maintained.
According to the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, 'De Hoop' is the oldest shipyard in Western Europe that is still in operation. Because of the uniqueness of the carpentry shed, its age and history, its completeness and its interconnectedness with the history of Workum, the entire complex has been recognized as a national monument. National monuments are buildings or other objects that have been designated as protected monuments by the national government because of their national cultural-historical value.
