Near Fochteloo you will find 2 former reception camps from the middle of the previous century: Camp IJbenheer and Camp Oranje. The camps were used as Jewish labor camps. After the war, the camp had various functions. Finally, this was the place where the ex-KNIL soldiers and their families were temporarily housed. That was in the period from 1951 to 1960. After that, the camp fell into disrepair and was largely demolished.
Because of the great historical value, Natuurmonumenten and the village of Fochteloo have mapped the contours of the camps and barracks again. There is now a walking route, a memorial and various information panels that keep the story of this area alive.
Both camps each have their own entrance from the Veenweg in Fochteloo.
