The Albert Cuypstraat is located just outside the canal ring. Until 1856, the Utrecht Gate guarded the access to the city here. Outside the Singelgracht, the development grew in an unstructured manner along the many ditches.
In the second half of the 19th century, the population of Amsterdam doubled to 500 thousand people. Therefore, there was an urgent need for housing to be built. If it had been up to engineer Jacob Niftrik, a beautiful villa district would have stood where De Pijp is now, with radiating avenues around a square. At the height of Hemonylaan, engineer Niftrik had drawn a train station. His plan was set aside for the simpler plan of Jan Kalff from 1877, which followed the course of the many ditches. Before the plan was finalized, the first rental barracks with half houses and alcoves had already risen in De Pijp. At that time, the Albert Cuypstraat was the Zaagmolensloot, an industrial area.
