Count Reinald I of Gelderland built the castle and a number of houses around 1300. His intention was to develop Staverden into a town. However, it never became more than a castle with some farms.
The castle was used by the dukes of Gelderland as a hunting lodge. Since 1400, vassals lived in Staverden, who had to manage and defend the castle for the count.
The castle and gardens are owned by the Gelders Landscape, a foundation aimed at protecting nature and landscape in the province of Gelderland.
The current castle, now the fourth, was partly built in 1853 and partly in 1905. It contains elements from the 17th century and is built on the foundations of the previous castle from the 18th century. No remains of the medieval castle are visible above ground level.
