The unique car-free nature reserve Gerendal between IJzeren and Schin op Geul is known for the numerous species of orchids that can be found there. In May and June, they can be admired in the garden by the forest ranger's house. In the area, you may encounter a flock of sheep grazing the calcareous grasslands. A few hundred meters past the ranger's house, there is a turn to the left where a 300-meter-long forest path, the Gerende Berg, leads to the higher plateau of Margraten and the Keutenberg. This slope has a gradient of 10.7%.
