The Bolwerken is an urban park in Haarlem, located north of the station, and includes the former fortifications of the city. After the city walls were demolished in the nineteenth century, the area was transformed into a park in English landscape style by landscape architect J.D. Zocher, who also designed the Vondelpark. In 2007, the two sides of the park were connected by a pedestrian bridge at Kloppersingel. The paths in the park are water-permeable thanks to the use of Grauwacke gravel.
