PHIL Haarlem

The original Concertgebouw in Haarlem was built and designed by architect Adrianus van der Steur in 1872-1873. The gentlemen's society "Vereeniging", established in 1856, was the owner and organized concerts. The new building replaced a row of properties in Lange Begijnestraat and Wijde Appelaarsteeg and opened in June 1873. After renovations in 1882 and 1894, the society withdrew from cultural activities in 1920. The municipality of Haarlem took over the building and expanded it in 1922 with a concert organ by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, installed in 1924 after restoration. The Grote Zaal served as the home base for the Haarlemsche Orkest Vereniging, later the Noordhollands Philharmonisch Orkest. In the 1970s, the municipality took over the operation and carried out renovations in 1973, 1977, and 1986.
