In the seventeenth century, the Lek was crossed on the Utrecht-Gorinchem route by ferry between Nieuwegein and Vianen, as this print by Abraham Rademaker from 1630 shows. There was no bridge at the time.
Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross by ferry. Please note the sailing times: Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 18:00, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 18:00. From 1 November to 1 April the ferry does not sail on Sundays and during the Christmas holidays. From Ascension Day to 31 August the ferry sails on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays until 20:30. Cyclists pay €1.50 for a ticket on board: only by debit card!
When the ferry is not running, you can cross the Lek via the nearby A2 bridge.
