Jan Peter Balkenende is the third Zeelandic in history to be Prime Minister of the Netherlands. The Zeelandic ancestry of the Balkenende family begins around the year 1800 in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. One Pieter Balkenende settled from Rotterdam in the Koegorspolder, located on the border of the municipalities of Axel and Terneuzen. He married Tannetje Ester van Dixhoorn in 1800, who came from an Axel family. A century later, descendants settled in and around the South Beveland villages of Kapelle-Biezelinge.
The oldest found records of ancestors of Jan Peter Balkenende date back to the early seventeenth century in Rotterdam. The origin of the family likely lies in Flanders.
