Discover all benefitsLatest update September 18, 2023: the work on the Maasdijk at Beesel is completed, there is now a gravel road over the dike and it has been added to the route. The share of gravel roads goes from 60.8% to 62%.
The route starts from the parking lot of camping Heldense Bossen and you follow it clockwise. The share of gravel roads on this route is 62%. The gravel roads in Germany are coarser than in the Netherlands, so it is advisable to cycle with tires wider than 28 mm (at least 30 to 32 mm wide tires).
The route goes through Midden-Limburg (where many gravel roads and gravel cycling paths are located) through agricultural areas interspersed with forests (Kesselse Bergen), and towards the Maas you cycle over gravel roads over an old river dune (Begijnenberg). You cross the Maas (with ferry Baarlo - Steyl). On the other side of the Maas you cycle through the valley of the Aalsbeek past castle Holtmühle. You cross the A73 via a bicycle bridge and then follow very long stretches of gravel through the many forests against and just over the border with Germany. Here you also encounter two climbs over gravel roads for the wheels over a steep edge, and a short steep climb when leaving the gravel pit Tegelen (which creates a colorful landscape in the autumn). Eventually, you find yourself back in the Netherlands and cycle through the Municipal forests of Swalmen to the valley of the river Swalm. You follow the Swalm downstream, cycling through Swalmen, but also over gravel roads around the Swalmdal. In the direction of Beesel, you follow many gravel roads that partially follow the Maas. With ferry Beesel - Kessel you cross the Maas and then you cycle (paved) along the Maas to Kessel-Eik. After that, long gravel cycling paths follow in the Heldense Bossen.
