The Historic Centre of Porto has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. This historic center is formed by the area enclosed by the Fernandinas Walls and some adjacent areas. The waterfront of Vila Nova de Gaia also belongs to the Historic Centre, although this officially does not belong to Porto. The view of the city from across the Douro is one of the most beautiful in the world. The literal highlight in this regard is the view from Serra do Pilar, a former monastery at the top of the highest hill opposite Porto in Vila Nova de Gaia.
