The bust of this illustrious archaeologist was placed here in 1933 and is the work of the sculptor António de Azevedo.
Francisco Martins Sarmento was born in Guimarães in 1833. A man of reasonable fortune, he spent his time investigating the origins of the land that gave him his being and distinguished himself as an archaeologist and ethnologist , devoting himself to supervising excavations and studying the Citânia de Briteiros and Castro de Sabroso.
He died in Guimarães in 1899, and it was on the day immediately after his death that the Guimarães City Council decided to name this square Largo de Martins Sarmento.
