Letterhoutem es una aldea en la provincia belga de Flandes Oriental y una submunicipalidad del municipio de Sint-Lievens-Houtem. Tiene una superficie de 4,59 km² y cuenta con 1224 habitantes. El lugar se encuentra en la región de Dender. En 1140, el lugar se mencionó como Holthem. "Hout" significa bosque y "hem" significa lugar de residencia o herencia. Por lo tanto, Letterhoutem era un lugar de residencia cerca del bosque. Más tarde, se encuentra el nombre Lettelhoutem, que significa "pequeño Houtem". En los documentos en latín, el pueblo se menciona como Parvo Houthem, donde "parvus" es una palabra latina que significa pequeño. La primera mención de Littelhouthem data de 1336. Posteriormente, se encuentran nuevamente las formas Lettelhoutem y finalmente Letterhoutem.
