Es una construcción neorrománica de 1923, construida para reemplazar un edificio de iglesia similar de 1877. No solo durante la Primera, sino también durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la iglesia sufrió graves daños. Las reparaciones de 1947 determinan también la apariencia actual. Las fachadas de ladrillo amarillo descansan sobre un zócalo de arenisca. La distinción de la iglesia románica de San Bernardo con las iglesias góticas de Nieuwpoort-Stad y San Jorge es evidente de un solo vistazo.
