El yacimiento de Bernissart es conocido principalmente por haber proporcionado 28 esqueletos fósiles completos de Iguanodon,[1][2][3][4] uno de los dinosaurios mejor conocidos gracias a este yacimiento. También se han recuperado restos de un dinosaurio carnívoro, dos especies de cocodrilo, dos tortugas, quince de peces , artrópodos y restos vegetales.[2] El yacimiento se formó en el Cretácico temprano, hace entre 130 y 112 millones de años atrás .
