Le stratigrafie ossea di Iguanodon bernissartensis è stata scoperta da minatori nel 1878 in una dolina della miniera di carbone di Sainte-Barbe nel villaggio di Bernissart, a una quindicina di chilometri da Mons nella provincia belga dell'Hainaut, nel bacino di Mons. Le strati ossei contengono i resti di almeno quarantatre esemplari del dinosauro ornithopode Iguanodon bernissartensis Boulenger 1881, tra gli altri, con venticinque scheletri quasi completi a relativamente completi e diciotto scheletri incompleti o materiale frammentario. Hanno un'età di circa 126-125 milioni di anni e risalgono quindi al Barremiano superiore fino all'Aptiano inferiore del Cretaceo inferiore.
