De Iguanodon bernissartensis-beenderlagen werden in 1878 door mijnwerkers ontdekt in een doline in de steenkoolmijn Sainte-Barbe van het dorp Bernissart op vijftien kilometer van Bergen in de Belgische provincie Henegouwen, in het Bekken van Bergen. De beenderlagen bevatten de resten van minstens drieënveertig specimina van onder meer de ornithopode dinosauriër Iguanodon bernissartensis Boulenger 1881, met vijfentwintig bijna volledige tot relatief volledige skeletten en achttien onvolledige skeletten of fragmentarisch materiaal. Ze zijn ongeveer 126 tot 125 miljoen jaar oud en dateren dus uit het Bovenste-Barremien tot Onderste-Aptien in het Onder-Krijt.
