El cornejo rojo (Cornus sanguinea) es fácil de reconocer por sus ramitas rojas. El arbusto florece en primavera con flores blancas, y en septiembre produce bayas de color rojo oscuro. Las bayas del cornejo rojo son apreciadas por los pájaros pero no son comestibles para los humanos.
También existe el cornejo amarillo. Estas bayas sí son comestibles, de las cuales se pueden hacer deliciosos jarabes y mermeladas. Así que ten cuidado de no confundir ambos cornejos: el cornejo rojo recibe su nombre por las ramas rojas, mientras que el cornejo amarillo (con sus frutos rojos) obtiene su nombre por sus flores amarillas.
