Un punto importante en la Primera Guerra Mundial fue la estación de Adinkerke, que sirvió como un centro de acogida para heridos. Los soldados eran llevados en carro y caballo o en tranvía hasta la estación, desde donde viajaban hacia el interior del país en tren. Sin embargo, el transporte militar de municiones, suministros y tropas tenía prioridad en la única vía. En marzo de 1915 hubo una enorme afluencia de heridos. ¿Sabías que entonces Marie Curie se apresuró rápidamente con un coche de radiología a la estación para examinar a los soldados heridos?
