Ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt im Ersten Weltkrieg war der Bahnhof von Adinkerke, der als Auffangzentrum für Verwundete diente. Soldaten wurden mit Pferd und Wagen oder mit der Straßenbahn zum Bahnhof gebracht, um von dort mit dem Zug ins Landesinnere zu reisen. Nur hatte der militärische Transport von Munition, Vorräten und Truppen Vorrang auf dem eingleisigen Gleis. Im März 1915 gab es einen enormen Zustrom von Verwundeten.
