Cuando la fuerza aérea estadounidense bombardeó las instalaciones ferroviarias el 9 de mayo de 1944, la hermosa villa de Oscar Coomans de Brachène fue completamente reducida a cenizas. En ese momento, el 'castillo Fontaine' había sido reclamado por la 12ª división blindada SS Hitlerjugend. Entre los soldados alemanes que permanecieron aquí, no hubo víctimas ese día. Esto sí fue el caso en la 'escuela de entrenamiento' cercana, donde más de setenta soldados alemanes perdieron la vida. Después de la guerra, el edificio destruido fue demolido y la familia Coomans de Brachène construyó un nuevo castillo en estilo neorrenacentista entre 1946 y 1948.
