Wanneer de Amerikaanse luchtmacht op 9 mei 1944 de spoorweginstallaties bombardeerde, werd de fraaie villa van Oscar Coomans de Brachène volledig in de as gelegd. Op dat moment was het ‘kasteel Fontaine’ opgeëist door de 12de SS-pantserdivisie Hitlerjugend. Onder de Duitse soldaten die hier verbleven, vielen er die dag geen slachtoffers. Dit was wel het geval in de nabije ‘leerschool’ waar meer dan zeventig Duitse soldaten omkwamen. Na de oorlog werd het vernielde gebouw afgebroken en werd er door de familie Coomans de Brachène tussen 1946 en 1948 een nieuw kasteel in neorenaissancestijl gebouwd.
