Una primera estación temporal de madera en Stene se abrió en 1838 como terminal de la línea Bruselas-Mechelen-Ostende.
En 1866, sin embargo, se amplió para tener una mejor conexión con el puerto para pasajeros y mercancías.
En 2012 se puso en marcha un importante proyecto de reforma, "Gare au bord de la mer", renovando el entorno de la estación. La parada de autobús y tranvía adyacente también ha sido renovada. En la plaza frente a la estación se encuentra el grupo escultórico "Pescatori".
