Una primera estació de ferrocarril provisional de fusta a Stene es va obrir el 1838 com a punt final de la ruta Brussel·les-Malines-Ostende.

L'any 1866, però, aquesta s'amplia per tenir una millor connexió amb el port de passatgers i mercaderies.

L'any 2012 es va iniciar un gran projecte de reforma, "estació al costat del mar", que ha renovat l'entorn de l'estació. També s'ha renovat l'estació d'autobusos i tramvia adjacents. A la plaça de davant de l'estació hi ha el grup escultòric 'les dones dels pescadors'.
