Una prima stazione temporanea in legno a Stene fu aperta nel 1838 come capolinea della linea Bruxelles-Mechelen-Ostenda.

Nel 1866, però, questa fu ampliata per avere un miglior collegamento con il porto per passeggeri e merci.

Nel 2012 è stato avviato un importante progetto di riforma, "Gare au bord de la mer", che ha rinnovato i dintorni della stazione. Anche l'adiacente fermata dell'autobus e del tram è stata rinnovata. Sul piazzale antistante la stazione si trova il gruppo scultoreo "Pescatori".
