Desde diciembre de 1878 hasta octubre de 1880, Vincent Van Gogh vivió en la Borinage, donde incluso en abril de 1879 descendió setecientos metros en la mina de carbón de Marcasse. Van Gogh vivía en la más amarga pobreza en Petit-Wasmes, a la vuelta de la Charbonnage de Marcasse.
Marcasse no solo recuerda a Van Gogh. Un monumento en una nicho de la mina conmemora a los 17 mineros que perdieron la vida aquí en una explosión de gas el 13 de enero de 1953. En 1958, cayó el telón para Marcasse. Las 2 torres de pozo fueron demolidas, pero el resto de los edificios de la fábrica (que, por cierto, no datan de la época de Van Gogh, sino de 1920) permanecieron en pie.
El sitio es propiedad privada, pero puedes visitarlo regularmente para recorridos guiados o eventos sobre Van Gogh en la Borinage, consulta vangoghborinage.canalblog.com.
