Para suministrar suficiente agua al río Elbe incluso en épocas de bajo nivel, mientras que en épocas de alto nivel se seguía drenando el agua, la ciudad de Magdeburgo ya había construido en 1806 una obra de retención conocida como Grahl en el brazo oriental del Elba. Sin embargo, la estructura, construida sobre pilares, fue destruida durante la ocupación francesa en 1806.
En 1816/1817, un poco más al norte, se construyó un desagüe, la actual cascada de Cracau, para regular el nivel del agua.
