Per garantire che il Stromelbe ricevesse abbastanza acqua anche in condizioni di bassa portata, ma continuando a deviare l'acqua in caso di alta marea, la città di Magdeburgo aveva già costruito nel 1806 una barriera chiamata Grahl nel ramo orientale dell'Elba. Tuttavia, l'opera costruita su pilastri fu distrutta durante l'occupazione francese nel 1806.
Nel 1816/1817 fu realizzato un ulteriore sbarramento, l'attuale Cascata di Cracau, un po' più a nord, per regolare il livello dell'acqua.
