La reserva natural de Lüneburger Heide es una de las más antiguas y grandes reservas naturales de Alemania y la más antigua y grande de Baja Sajonia. El 29 de diciembre de 1921, por primera vez, un área de la Lüneburger Heide de cuatro millas cuadradas fue declarada parque de protección natural por el gobierno prusiano, y el 12 de enero de 1922, la orden de protección entró en vigor. La actual orden de la administración distrital de Lüneburg "sobre la reserva natural 'Lüneburger Heide' en los distritos de Harburg y Soltau-Fallingbostel" data del 17 de junio de 1993.
La superficie del área también conocida como parque natural Lüneburger Heide era idéntica a la de este antes de la ampliación del parque natural Lüneburger Heide en 2007.
