El museo se encuentra en la casa histórica protegida por monumentos Hövener. Wilhelmine Hövener fundó en vida la Fundación Briloner Eisenberg y Gewerke – Museo de la ciudad de Brilon.
El museo fue fundado en 1983 y inicialmente se ubicaba en la Casa del Visitante. Más tarde, el museo se trasladó a la casa Henning en el camino Heinrich-Jansen. Después de la remodelación de la casa Hövener, el museo de la ciudad se encuentra ahora bajo su nuevo nombre Museo Casa Hövener allí en la plaza del mercado, las piezas de exhibición existentes se integraron en la medida de lo posible.
