Het museum is gevestigd in het monumentale historische huis Hövener. Wilhelmine Hövener richtte tijdens haar leven de Stichting Briloner Eisenberg en Gewerke – Stadsmuseum Brilon op.
Het museum werd in 1983 opgericht en was aanvankelijk in het Huis van de Gast. Later werd het museum ondergebracht in het Huis Henning aan de Heinrich-Jansen-Weg. Na de verbouwing van het huis Hövener is het stadsmuseum onder zijn nieuwe naam Museum Huis Hövener daar op de markt gevestigd, en de bestaande tentoonstellingsstukken zijn, waar mogelijk, geïntegreerd.
