Il museo si trova nella storica casa protetta da vincolo monumentale Hövener. Wilhelmine Hövener fondò durante la sua vita la Fondazione Briloner Eisenberg e Gewerke – Museo cittadino di Brilon.
Il museo fu fondato nel 1983 e inizialmente si trovava nella Casa degli Ospiti. Successivamente, il museo fu collocato nella Casa Henning in Heinrich-Jansen-Weg. Dopo la ristrutturazione della casa Hövener, il museo cittadino è stato trasferito, con il suo nuovo nome Museo Casa Hövener, lì nella piazza del mercato, gli oggetti esposti sono stati integrati, per quanto possibile.
