Le musée est situé dans la maison historique classée au patrimoine, la maison Hövener. Wilhelmine Hövener a fondé de son vivant la fondation Briloner Eisenberg et Gewerke – Musée de la ville de Brilon.
Le musée a été fondé en 1983 et se trouvait initialement dans la maison des invités. Plus tard, le musée a été logé dans la maison Henning sur le chemin Heinrich-Jansen. Après la rénovation de la maison Hövener, le musée de la ville a été transféré sous son nouveau nom, Musée Maison Hövener, sur la place du marché, les pièces d'exposition existantes ont été intégrées dans la mesure du possible.
