El castillo de Kuckuckstein en Liebstadt se encuentra en un saliente rocoso sobre el valle del río Seidewitz, en una ubicación muy favorable para el control de la ruta comercial desde el valle del Elba a través de las montañas de Ore hacia Bohemia.
Liebstadt y, por lo tanto, el castillo de Kuckuckstein están situados aproximadamente a 15 km al suroeste de Pirna en un valle entre los profundos valles de Gottleuba y Müglitz, aproximadamente a la misma altura que Bad Gottleuba y Glashütte.
